CHARLESTON, S.C. – It wasn’t always the prettiest, but it was effective.

Asher Wojciechowski, a potential first-round draft pick, battled through eight innings as top-seeded The Citadel defeated eighth-seeded Furman 9-5 Wednesday in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The Bulldogs (39-20) will face the winner of the Elon-Samford contest on Thursday at 5 p.m., while the Paladins (19-36) meet the loser at 1 p.m.

Working in front of numerous radar guns and professional scouts, Wojciechowski scattered 11 hits, the most he’s surrendered as a collegian. He gave up five runs (four earned), walked one and struck out eight. His final six outs came on punchouts.

Furman fought hard against the SoCon Pitcher of the Year. Dylan Cole and J.B. Jenkins had belted consecutive home runs in the top of the seventh to even the score at 4.

The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the frame. Justin Mackert had a RBI fielder’s choice to break the tie. Kyle Jordan followed with a two-run double and scored on a base hit by David Greene as the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 8-4.

The Paladins got one back in the top of the eighth on a double by Reese Wade, but stranded a pair in scoring position as Wojciechowski fanned the final two batters he faced.

The Citadel plated an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a base hit by Bryan Altman. Raymond Copenhaver pitched the ninth to preserve the victory.

Justin Mackert had two hits and three RBI, while William Ladd contributed three hits and two runs for the Bulldogs.

Brian Harrison went 3 for 4 with a run for Furman. Will Muzika knocked in two for the Paladins.
