TCU wins at Texas for
first trip to Omaha
Gamecocks headed to College World Series,
Clemson forces Game 3 at Auburn
In
Austin, Texas, TCU pulled off the unthinkable, thanks again to
outstanding starting pitching and timely hitting, and the Horned
Frogs are going to their first College World Series after
slipping past Texas 4-1 Sunday in the final game of the
best-of-three Austin Super Regional. Kyle Winkler (12-1) (left)
tossed 7.2 scoreless innings with five hits, three walks and six
strikeouts, and Aaron Schultz ripped a two-run homer off Chance
Ruffin in the seventh as TCU (51-12) avenged last year’s Super
Regional loss to the Longhorns (50-13). Bryan Holaday also
homered off Ruffin in the eighth to give TCU a 4-0 lead. Schultz
made a splendid catch in center later, and Tyler Lockwood picked
up his seventh save. Horned Frogs coach Jim Schlossnagle will be
returning to Omaha for the first time since serving as an
assistant at Tulane in 2001.
South Carolina 10, #4 Coastal Carolina 9
In
Myrtle Beach, S.C., Christian Walker belted a three-run homer in
the bottom of the eighth and Matt Price pitched a perfect ninth
as South Carolina completed a Super Regional sweep of #4 Coastal
Carolina to advance to the College World Series. The
Chanticleers (55-10) scored single runs in the seventh and
eighth to take a 9-7 lead. With two outs and none on, Jackie
Bradley Jr. (right) walked and moved to third on a double by
Adrian Morales. Walker crushed a 1-2 pitch to left to give the
Gamecocks (48-15) a 10-9 lead. Price retired the side in order
in the top of the ninth for his 10th save. Walker finished with
two hits, two runs and three RBI. Bobby Haney went 3 for 3 with
a run for South Carolina. Tommy La Stella had two hits, three
walks and three RBI for Coastal. Taylor Motter and Daniel Bowman
both went deep for the Chants.
Clemson 19, Alabama 5
In Clemson, S.C., Brad Miller and Richie Shaffer
both homered and drove in four as Clemson evened its Super
Regional series with Alabama at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The
Tigers (42-23) scored in five of the first six innings,
including six in the first and nine in the sixth. Miller went 4
for 5 with three runs, while Shaffer added two hits and two
runs. Jeff Shaus went 4 for 6 with two runs and three RBI for
Clemson. Ross Wilson had two hits, including a home run, for the
