In Wichita, Kan., Corey Maines and Ryan Copeland
combined on the shutout as Illinois State blanked Bradley at Eck
Stadium. Maines allowed five hits in seven innings with one walk
and four strikeouts to earn the win. Copeland fanned three of
the six he faced for his third save. Anthony Ruffolo had two
hits and two RBI for the Redbirds (20-31). He had a run-scoring
double in the third and a RBI base hit in the seventh. Brian
Martin and Mike Tauchman both had two hits for the Braves
(20-31).
In the first game, Ben Farrell had a game-winning
RBI single in the bottom of the 10th as Indiana State edged
Creighton. The Bluejays (26-24) used a four-run second to take a
5-1 lead. The Sycamores (34-17) scored four in the sixth to take
a 7-6 lead. Creighton got a run in the eighth to force extra
innings. Tyler Graham had three hits and two runs for Indiana
State. Alex Straehely had two hits, including a home run, and
three RBI for the Bluejays.
Cody Fick homered twice and Greg Wallace had two
triples as Evansville outscored Southern Illinois. Wallace had a
two-run triple and Fick added a two-run dinger in the fifth as
the Purple Aces (31-25) took a 4-0 lead. Fick went deep again in
a five-run ninth. Chris Serritella had three hits and two runs,
and Brian Baher drove in two for the Salukis (28-28).
Jordan Cooper, the MVC Pitcher of the Year, went
the distance as Wichita State stopped Missouri State. Cooper
(10-2) allowed eight hits and two runs with no walks and seven
strikeouts. Kevin Medrano homered in the first for the Bears
(20-32). The Shockers (39-18) answered with four in the fifth,
and Bret Bascue (2 for 2) hit a two-run homer in the sixth to
give WSU a 6-2 advantage.

In Rock Hill, S.C., Chase Worthington had a pair
of RBI doubles as VMI defeated UNC Asheville at The Winthrop
Ballpark. The Keydets (33-20) used a three-run fourth to take
the lead for good at 4-2. Worthington had run-scoring doubles in
the fifth and seventh innings. Sam Roberts had three hits,
including two doubles, one run and one RBI for VMI. John Garrett
(6-1) allowed one hit and one unearned run in four innings of
relief with four strikeouts to earn the victory. Robert McIntosh
had two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs (17-35).
Chas Crane homered and Matteo D’Angelo
surrendered one run in six innings as Winthrop nipped
Gardner-Webb. Crane went deep in the second, and he doubled and
scored in a two-run sixth as the Eagles (26-28) took a 4-0 lead.
Josh Drewery had a two-run homer in the eighth as the Bulldogs
(25-30) pulled to within one. D’Angelo (8-5) allowed six hits
and one run with two walks and five strikeouts. Tyler Mizenko
pitched the final three innings for his sixth save.
Mountain West
#5 UNLV 9, #4 BYU 1
#6 Utah 12, #3 San Diego State 6
In San Diego, Tanner Peters struck out nine as
UNLV beat BYU at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Peters allowed six hit and
one walk over seven innings. Jarred Frierson went 4 for 4 with
two runs for the Rebels (28-27). Brandon Bayardi had two hits
and three RBI for UNLV. Jonathan Cluff had three hits for the
Cougars (25-30).
Nick Kuroczko went 5 for 5 with five RBI as
defending champion Utah topped host San Diego State. The Utes
(23-26) used a seven-run fourth to erase a 2-0 deficit. Michael
Beltran had three hits and two runs for Utah. Cory Vaughn went 3
for 5 with a double and three RBI for the Aztecs (28-27). Rick
Anton (7-3) went 5.1 innings to earn the win, and Tyler Wagner
fanned five in 3.2 hitless innings to record his third save.
