Florida and TCU both won for the first time at
the College World Series on Saturday. The last time that two
teams won their first CWS contest on the same day was on June 7,
1975, when Eastern Michigan and South Carolina both posted their
first wins in Omaha.
*****
In each of the games on Saturday, both teams
scored in the first inning. The last time both teams scored in
the first inning in the first two games of the CWS was in 1947
(California and Yale, June 27-28).
*****
Florida is now 3-2 all-time against UCLA. All
five meetings have occurred on neutral sites (two in Orlando,
two in Oklahoma City, one in Omaha).
*****
UCLA improved to 4-0 against SEC teams this
season. The Bruins already had wins over Mississippi State, LSU
and Vanderbilt prior to their victory over Florida.
*****
Trevor Bauer struck out 11 Gators, the seventh
time he reached double figures in strikeouts this year. Bauer
set a school record with 152 strikeouts this season. He is
second in the nation in punchouts, behind the 155 by Asher
Wojciechowski of The Citadel.
“His stuff always shows up,” said UCLA head coach
John Savage. “He’s a tremendous young pitcher. We knew that he
would settle in, he’d find his release point, find his
mechanics. He’s done that all season.”
