Florida and TCU both won for the first time at the College World Series on Saturday. The last time that two teams won their first CWS contest on the same day was on June 7, 1975, when Eastern Michigan and South Carolina both posted their first wins in Omaha.

In each of the games on Saturday, both teams scored in the first inning. The last time both teams scored in the first inning in the first two games of the CWS was in 1947 (California and Yale, June 27-28).

Florida is now 3-2 all-time against UCLA. All five meetings have occurred on neutral sites (two in Orlando, two in Oklahoma City, one in Omaha).

UCLA improved to 4-0 against SEC teams this season. The Bruins already had wins over Mississippi State, LSU and Vanderbilt prior to their victory over Florida.

Trevor Bauer struck out 11 Gators, the seventh time he reached double figures in strikeouts this year. Bauer set a school record with 152 strikeouts this season. He is second in the nation in punchouts, behind the 155 by Asher Wojciechowski of The Citadel.

 

“His stuff always shows up,” said UCLA head coach John Savage. “He’s a tremendous young pitcher. We knew that he would settle in, he’d find his release point, find his mechanics. He’s done that all season.”
