TCU became the first team to win its initial
College World Series game since Georgia Tech, which defeated Cal
State Fullerton 2-0 in 1994. The past 10 teams had lost their
first games in Omaha, including Virginia and Southern Miss a
year ago.
*****
The attendance for Game 1 was 23,649, the largest
crowd ever for the Horned Frogs.
*****
TCU’s win was the first in Omaha for a Mountain
West Conference school, which formed in 2000. TCU is the fourth
MWC-affiliated school to reach Omaha, joining BYU (1968, 1971),
Wyoming (1956) and Utah (1951).
*****
There were two unusual double plays in the CWS
opener, both coming in the third inning. In the top of the
frame, Florida State had runners on first and second with one
out. Mike McGee hit a popup to second on a hit-and-run play.
Tyler Holt had past third base, but did not retouch third on his
way back to second. He was called out on the appeal, a 4-1-5
double play.
In the bottom of the third, the Horned Frogs had
runners on second and third with one down. Brance Rivera laid
down a suicide squeeze, scoring Jantzen Witte. Taylor
Featherston rounded third and tried to score, but was gunned
down at the plate. It was a 1-3-2 DP.
*****
Oregon head coach George Horton was in attendance
for the first day of the 2010 CWS. Horton was sporting a green
Oregon shirt and green Oregon cap.
*****
Florida State fell to 8-12 in CWS openers,
including four of its past five openers dating back to 1996.
