United League Baseball to hold Winter League

United League Baseball will hold a month-long winter league from Jan. 15 to Feb. 15.

The Texas Winter League will be hosted by the Rio Grande WhiteWings at Harlingen Field, located in southern Texas.

The league will include 100 players, with each team playing 24 seven-inning games over a 30-day period. It is set up as a developmental league for graduated college seniors. A minimum of 24 players will be drafted into the six-team independent United League Baseball for the 2011 season.

Coaches and managers from United League Baseball will coach the participants, including former AL MVP Jose Canseco, who played and coached for the Laredo Broncos this past season.

The cost for each player is $3,000, which covers housing, meals and daily transportation to and from the ballpark.

The WhiteWings also hosted the Texas Winter League in 2007.

United League Baseball has its six teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, Robstown and San Angelo. The league, which just completed its fifth season has sent two players to the major leagues: Edwar Ramirez with the New York Yankees and Robinson Cancel with the New York Mets.
