All-American Rendon suffers
ankle injury
Rice
All-America third baseman Anthony Rendon (left) suffered a
fracture-dislocation of the right ankle on Wednesday while
playing with Team USA against Korea at the National Training
Complex in Cary, N.C.
The 2010 Dick Howser Trophy winner as national
player of the year, Rendon was injured in the first inning as he
was picked off of first base and tried to avoid a tag in a
rundown between first and second.
Rendon was scheduled to return to Houston on
Friday for evaluation and surgery.
This past season for the Owls, Rendon batted .394
with 26 home runs and 85 RBI. He had 83 runs, 65 walks, a
slugging percentage of .801 and an on-base percentage of .530.
Rendon led Rice to its 16th consecutive NCAA Tournament
appearance, its 16th straight 40-win season and 15th straight
conference championship.
Rendon also had his freshman season at Rice
halted by an ankle injury in the second inning of the final
Super Regional game at LSU.
