Draft picks sign before Monday
deadline
The
majority of the unsigned high picks from this year’s Major
League draft inked deals before the midnight deadline Monday.
The top selection, Bryce Harper of Southern
Nevada, agreed to terms with the Washington Nationals.
Several former Division I players also signed on
Monday: Drew Pomeranz (right) of Ole Miss with the Cleveland
Indians, Matt Harvey of North Carolina with the New York Mets,
Deck McGuire of Georgia Tech with the Toronto Blue Jays, Yasmani
Grandal of Miami (Fla.) with the Cincinnati Reds, Gary Brown of
Cal State Fullerton with the San Francisco Giants, Zack Cox of
Arkansas with the St. Louis Cardinals, Kyle Parker of Clemson
with the Colorado Rockies, Anthony Ranaudo of LSU with the
Boston Red Sox, Brett Eibner of Arkansas with the Kansas City
Royals, Jordan Swagerty of Arizona State with the St. Louis
Cardinals and Austin Wates of Virginia Tech with the Houston
Astros..
The sixth overall pick, Barret Loux of Texas A&M,
failed to sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks after failing a
physical exam.
Dylan Covey, the No. 14 overall selection, could
not reach a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers after being
diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after taking a physical. Covey
will pitch for the San Diego Toreros.
