Arizona State banned from 2011
NCAA Tournament
The
Arizona State baseball team received sanctions from the NCAA,
including a ban from the 2011 tournament.
The Sun Devils must vacate their 44 victories
from the 2007 season, including their Pac-10 title and College
World Series appearance. Other penalties, some self-imposed by
the university, are scholarship reductions, recruiting
restrictions and limitations on coaching activity during
practice. ASU was also placed on three years probation.
The NCAA concluded that former head coach Pat
Murphy and former assistants made more than 500 impermissible
recruiting call and did not promote an atmosphere for compliance
from 2004-08. Murphy, who was fired in 2009, received a one-year
show-cause penalty.
