Notre Dame stops St. John's, Butler bounces YSU, Utah edges BYU in 10

In Clearwater, Fla., No. 20 Louisville used a pair of six-run innings to put away Cincinnati at Bright House Field. Jeff Arnold had an RBI double in a six-run first for the Cardinals (41-14). The Bearcats (29-28) got a pair in the seventh, but Jeff Arnold’s three-run homer capped a six-run rally in the bottom of the frame to halt the game for the 10-run rule. Arnold finished with three hits and four RBI, while Ryan Wright had two hits and three RBI for the Cards, who face Notre Dame Wednesday at 5 p.m. Lance Durham had two hits for UC, which meets St. John’s in an elimination game at 1 p.m.

 

A.J. Pollock went 4 for 6 with three RBI as Notre Dame downed St. John’s. The Fighting Irish (34-21) scored four in the second before the Red Storm (29-21) got one in the fourth and two in the fifth to pull to within one. Notre Dame scored three in the seventh to make it 7-3 before Paul Karmas belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit in half. The Irish added two in the eighth and a homer by Jeremy Barnes sparked a five-run ninth. Barnes finished with three hits and three RBI. Karmas went 4 for 5 with two runs and three RBI for St. John’s.

 

Elliot Glynn (5-4) held WVU to seven hits and one run in 7.1 innings with seven strikeouts for UConn. Justin Parks doubled and scored in the third for the Mountaineers (36-17). Mike Nemeth had an RBI double to snap a 1-1 tie in a six-run eighth for the Huskies (34-23). Pierre LePage had three hits for UConn. Parks, Jedd Gyorko and Dan DiBartolomeo each had two hits for WVU.

 

The final game of the day between USF and Pittsburgh was postponed due to inclement weather. It is scheduled to be played Wednesday at 10 a.m.

 

Big South

#6 High Point 2, #7 Charleston Southern 1 (CSU eliminated)

#8 VMI 13, #5 Gardner-Webb 4 (GWU eliminated)

In Asheville, N.C., Bill Manion had two hits and one RBI to lead HPU past CSU at McCormick Field. Eric Marion had a run-scoring single in the second to give the Panthers (20-30) the early lead. Manion’s RBI single in the fifth extend his hit streak to 21 and gave HPU a 2-0 advantage. Derek Smith had a sac fly in the sixth for the Buccaneers (16-37). Corey Swickle (2-2) earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings of relief with two hits and three strikeouts. Jeremy Berg worked 2.1 shutout innings with three hits to record his fourth save. Tom Burkett had three hits for CSU.

 

Jordan Ballard went 5 for 6 with four runs and three RBI as VMI thumped Gardner-Webb. After the Bulldogs (25-25) scored one in the first, Ballard’s two-run single keyed a five-run third for the Keydets (18-33). Ballard had a single and scored in a three-run fourth as VMI built an 8-1 lead. Ty Boyles had a two-run homer in the eighth for GWU. Tanner Biagini also had four hits for VMI. Tyler Johnson had two hits for the Bulldogs.

 

Horizon League

#7 Butler 7, #6 Youngstown State 6 (YSU eliminated)

In Lorain, Ohio, Alex Montagano had a two-run single to highlight a four-run first as Butler bounced YSU at The Pipe Yard. Grant Fillipitch added a two-run homer in the sixth for a 7-2 lead for the Bulldogs (13-39). Eric Marzec had a three-run dinger in the sixth to pull the Penguins (16-35) within two. Anthony Porter had a solo shot in the seventh, one of his three hits, to complete the scoring. Jared Wagoner tossed a scoreless eighth and Ryan Kruszka worked the ninth for his third save. Jeremy Banks had four hits, one run and one RBI for YSU. Fillipitch finished with three hits, two runs and two RBI for Butler, which will face #3 Wright State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

 

Mountain West

#6 Utah 2, #3 BYU 1 (10)

#4 San Diego State 12, #5 UNLV 1

In Fort Worth, Texas, Tyler Yagi had an RBI single with two outs in the top of the 10th to lead Utah past BYU at Lupton Stadium. Cooper Blanc had a one-out single in the 10th for the Utes (22-28). One out later, he stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Following a walk, Yagi had a base hit up the middle to plate Blanc with the go-ahead run. Greg Krause pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th to preserve the victory. Krause (1-4) worked the final 1.2 innings with one strikeout to earn the win. J.T. Musso had an RBI single in the second for the Cougars (28-23) before Yagi knocked in Blanc in the sixth to tie it at 1. BYU plays an elimination game at 11 a.m. Wednesday, while Utah meets top-seeded TCU at 7 p.m.

 

Tyler Lavigne (7-1) allowed three hits in 7.2 innings with eight strikeouts as SDSU overwhelmed UNLV. Erik Castro had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI for the Aztecs (38-19), who blew the game open with seven in the eighth. Cory Vaughn added two hits, including a two-bagger, and two RBI for SDSU. The Aztecs meet #2 New Mexico, while the Rebels (26-31) face BYU in an elimination game.

 

#1 UC Irvine 5, UCLA 4 (10)

In Irvine, Calif., Casey Stevenson drove in the game-winner to cap a two-run rally in the bottom of the 10th as UCI edged UCLA in front of a season-high crowd of 2,726 fans at Anteater Ballpark. Cody Decker hit his 20th homer in the top of the 10th to give the Bruins (26-27) a 4-3 lead. Tommy Reyes hit a one-out double in the bottom of the frame and moved to third on a groundout. Ronnie Shaeffer reached on an error to allow Reyes to score the tying run. Shaeffer advanced to second on a wild pitch and came home on Stevenson’s hit. The Anteaters (41-12) tied it 3-3 in the sixth on a two-run homer by Eric Deregisch.

 

No. 5 Cal State Fullerton 9, Pepperdine 1

In Fullerton, Calif., Joe Scott’s three-run triple highlighted a seven-run first as Cal State Fullerton put away Pepperdine. Christian Colon reached twice in the first with a run and a RBI for the Titans (39-14). The Waves (31-23) got their run in the ninth as Brian Humphries had a triple and scored on a base hit by Ryan Van Amburg.

 

Cal State Northridge 3, Cal State Bakersfield 0

In Bakersfield, Calif., seven hurlers combined n the three-hit shutout as Cal State Northridge stopped Cal State Bakersfield. Ryan Pineda had an RBI double and scored in the fifth for the Matadors (23-30). Richard Cates singled and scored in the sixth for CSUN. Kyle Richardson had a single and a walk for the Roadrunners (11-35).

 

Oregon State 2, Oregon 0

In Corvallis, Ore., Tyler Waldron (5-3) pitched 7.1 shutout innings with 10 strikeouts as OSU blanked Oregon in front of 2,564 fans at Goss Stadium for Pat Casey’s 500th win with the Beavers. Kevin Rhoderick worked the ninth for his eighth save. John Wallace had an RBI double in the second for OSU (32-16). Wallace walked and scored on a base hit by Rob Folson in the fifth. Danny Pulfer had a hit and a walk for the Ducks (14-38).

 

Gonzaga 8, Washington State 7

In Spokane, Wash., Drew Heid went 3 for 4 as Gonzaga nipped WSU. The Cougars (28-23) scored a pair in the first before Jason Chatwood’s three-run homer capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the frame for the Bulldogs (33-16). Garry Huykendall had a two-run double in the fourth for WSU.

 

USC 5, UC Riverside 4

In Los Angeles, Mike O’Neill went 5 for 5 and scored the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth as USC nipped UCR at Dedeaux Field. O’Neill tripled in the ninth and came home on a wild pitch to make a winner of Robert Stock (4-4), who struck out the side in the top of the ninth. Joe De Pinto had two hits and scored for the Trojans (26-27). Carl Uhl had a triple and scored for the Highlanders (31-19).

 

UC Davis 11, Stanford 2

In Stanford, Calif., Ty Kelly drove in five as UCD downed Stanford at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Kelly had a two-run double in a six-run second and added a three-run homer in a four-run eighth. Ryan Scoma and Kyle Mihaylo both had three hits for the Aggies (11-40). Brent Milleville had two hits and one run for the Cardinal (29-23).
