Larson drives in three as UC Irvine wins at Utah

New Mexico beats BYU; Stony Brook tops Fairleigh Dickinson

 

In Salt Lake City, Utah, Francis Larson (left) drove in three as No. 3 UC Irvine won the series opener over Utah 8-3 Thursday at Spring Mobile Ballpark. Jeff Cusick had three hits and a run for the Anteaters (29-10). Daniel Bibona (7-1) allowed seven hits and two runs in seven innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Larson had a sac fly in a three-run third for UCI. Tyler Yagi had an RBI single in the fifth for the Utes (14-23). Tommy Reyes had a two-run double in the sixth to give the Anteaters a 5-1 advantage. After CJ Cron homered in the bottom of the frame for Utah, Larson had a two-run triple to highlight a three-run seventh. Eric Deragisch had two hits and two runs for UCI. Yagi and Cron both had two hits for the Utes.

 

New Mexico 12, BYU 2

In Provo, Utah, Kevin Atkinson had two hits and four RBI as New Mexico won the opener of its Mountain West series against BYU at Larry Miller Field. Brian Cavazos-Galvez had two hits and three RBI for the Lobos (11-5, 31-11). Ryan Honeycutt had a two-run double in the fifth to give New Mexico a 4-1 lead. Atkinson had a three-run homer in a four-run ninth for the Lobos. Kent Walton and Brandon Relf both had two hits for the Cougars (10-6, 23-16).

 

Stony Brook 5, Fairleigh Dickinson 1

In Teaneck, N.J., Michael Tansey had three hits, including two doubles, two runs and one RBI as Stony Brook beat Fairleigh Dickinson. Nick Thode homered to spark a two-run third for the Seawolves (18-16). SBU added two in the fourth and one in the sixth. The Knights (9-23) got on the board in the seventh on an RBI single by Steven LaForge. Keith Fier and Chad Rebecca both had two hits for the Seawolves. Zachary Sand had a double for FDU.

 

Hartford 7, Yale 6 (12)

In West Hartford, Conn., Andy Drexel walked and scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the 12th as Hartford edged Yale at the Hartford Baseball Field. The Hawks (9-21) scored a run in the ninth to force extra innings. Mike Amendola had two hits, two runs and two RBI for Hartford. Zach Tobolowsky had three hits, including a home run, for the Bulldogs (12-21). Andrew Kolmar also homered and drove in two for Yale.

 

Eastern Illinois 11, Illinois College 1

In Charleston, Ill., Ryan Lindquist had three hits to lead EIU past Illinois College at Coaches Stadium. Zach Carney (1-0) allowed six singles and one run in six innings with one walk to earn the victory. Alex Gee homered and scored four for the Panthers (29-9). Richie Derbak had a two-run single in a five-run sixth for EIU. Victor Fink had two hits and one RBI for Illinois College (8-13).

 

Delaware State 3, Delaware 1

In Dover, Del., Jordan Elliott (1-1) allowed two hits in six scoreless innings with five strikeouts as DSU edged UD at Soldier Field. Justin Bittner and Abe Eubank both homered for the Hornets (17-15-1). Jared Olson went deep in the seventh for the Blue Hens (22-15).

 

Holy Cross 17, Brown 12

In Worcester, Mass., Jake Gorman homered twice, scored four and drove in three as Holy Cross outscored Brown at Fitton Field. Brendan McCrea had four hits and four runs for the Crusaders (18-22). Nick Ciardiello had two hits and two RBI for Holy Cross. Gorman had a two-run homer in the first and, after adding one in the second, the Crusaders erupted for eight in the third to take control. John Sills had three hits and three runs for Holy Cross. Pete Greskoff went deep twice and drove in seven for the Bears (18-17). Robert Papenhause had four hits and two runs for Brown.

 

Navy 10, Maryland-Eastern Shore 7

In Princess Anne, Md., Josh Moore had two hits, two runs and two RBI as Navy got by UMES at Hawks Stadium. Nick Driscoll added two hits and two runs for the Midshipmen (17-23-1). Navy scored six in the fourth to build a 10-1 lead. Ben Vasko had three hits and three RBI for the Hawks (11-32).

 

Indianapolis 7, SIU Edwardsville 6 (10)

In Edwardsville, Ill., Chase Kittinger had an RBI single in the top of the 10th as Indianapolis edged SIUE at SimmonsCooper Complex. Brett Keeler (2 for 4) had a two-run single in the sixth that gave the Cougars (9-26) a 5-3 lead. Andrew Armour (2 for 6, 4 RBI) had a two-run single in a three-run seventh for Indianapolis (30-16). SIUE tied it in the eighth on a run-scoring base hit by Michael Hopkins.

 

Robert Morris (Ill.) 9, Chicago State 8

In Crestwood, Ill., Robert Morris scored three in the seventh and three in the eighth to rally past Chicago State. Matt Whitney had two hits and three RBI for the Eagles (29-12). Matt Haug had two hits and knocked in three for the Cougars (3-33).

 

Milwaukee 7, Cardinal Stritch 3

In Milwaukee, Tim Patzman was a triple short of the cycle as Milwaukee topped CSU at Henry Aaron Field. Patzman homered to spark a five-run second for the Panthers (16-19). Andy Gerhartz added a two-run double for UWM. Andy Abromaitis had two hits for the Wolves (6-39).

 

Cleveland State 7, Niagara 3

In Niagara, N.Y., Josh Hungerman had four hits, two runs and three RBI as CSU defeated Niagara at Bobo Field. Brad Buell had three hits, including a homer, and three runs for the Vikings (13-21). Nate Dick (2-1) allowed three hits in six innings with two unearned runs and three strikeouts. Hungerman had a three-run homer in the seventh to give CSU a 7-2 lead. Brian Deering had two hits for the Purple Eagles (15-25).
