Jacksonville State nips Georgia; Western
Carolina edges Georgia Tech
In
Greenville, N.C., Kevin Brandt (left) struck out a career-high
10 as East Carolina edged No. 2 North Carolina 4-0 Wednesday in
front of a record-crowd of 5,581 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair
Stadium. It was the largest crowd to see a regular-season
college baseball game in the state of North Carolina. Brandt
(6-1) worked 8.1 innings and extended his scoreless streak to
20.2. Seth Maness entered with the bases loaded in the ninth and
recorded the final two outs to record his second save. Ryan Wood
broke a scoreless tie with a homer in the sixth for the Pirates
(30-12). Jared Aychen had a two-run single in a three-run
seventh. Ryan Graepel had a double for the Tar Heels (32-11).
Jacksonville State 9, No. 5 Georgia 7
In Jacksonville, Ala., Kyle Bluestein had three
hits, including a two-run homer, three runs and four RBI as JSU
upset Georgia in front of a record-crowd of 2,887 fans at Rudy
Abbott Field. Colby May had a two-run homer in the first for the
Bulldogs (32-9) before Bluestein’s two-run shot in the bottom of
the frame tied it. The Gamecocks (23-14) scored six in the
fourth to take the lead for good. Daniel Adamson had two hits
and two RBI for JSU. May had three hits and two runs for
Georgia.. Matt Cerione had two hits, including a homer, and two
runs for the Bulldogs.
Western Carolina 10, No. 7 Georgia Tech 9
In Cullowhee, N.C., WCU scored a pair in the
sixth and seventh to erase a 9-6 deficit and nip Georgia Tech at
Childress Field/Hennon Stadium. Matt Johns had two hits,
including a homer, three runs and two RBI for the Catamounts
(23-16). Mitchell Hatley had three hits and two runs for WCU.
Tony Plagman homered and knocked in three for the Yellow Jackets
(27-9-1). Derek Dietrich had a dinger, three hits and two RBI
for Tech.
No. 8 LSU 10, Louisiana-Lafayette 6
In Metarie, La., Blake Dean, Micah Gibbs and Ryan
Schimpf each homered as LSU powered past ULL in front of 6,601
fans at the sixth annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic at Zephyr
Field. Dean’s two-run homer in the third gave the Tigers (30-12)
a 4-0 advantage. Gibbs had a two-run shot in the fourth for a
6-1 lead. The Cajuns (18-20-1) scored four in the fifth before
LSU added one in the bottom of the frame and Schimpf’s two-run
dinger in the sixth gave the Tigers a 9-5 lead. DJ LeMahieu had
two hits and two RBI for LSU. Travis Whipple had three hits and
two runs for ULL.
No. 9 Cal State Fullerton 15, Pepperdine 2
In Malibu, Calif., Gary Brown scored five times
to lead Cal State Fullerton past Pepperdine. The Titans (26-11)
put up six in the first, two in the second and three in the
fourth in building an 11-1 lead. Jared Clark had two hits, two
runs and three RBI for Fullerton. Denny Duron had three hits and
one run for the Waves (23-17).
No. 11 Ole Miss 8, Southern Miss 4
In Hattiesburg, Miss., Evan Button went 5 for 5
with one run and two RBI as Ole Miss doubled up Southern Miss at
Pete Taylor Park. Kyle Henson added three hits for the Rebels
(30-11). Henson had an RBI double and Button added a run-scoring
single in the second as Ole Miss took the early lead. The Rebels
added two in the third and one in the fourth for a 5-0
advantage. Corey Stevens had a two-run double in the fifth for
the Golden Eagles (25-15). Henson finished with three hits and
two runs. Stevens had two hits and a run for Southern Miss.
Texas State 7, No. 12 Baylor 2
In Waco, Texas, Ben Theriot and Jason Martinson
both had three hits, two runs and two RBI as Texas State beat
Baylor at Baylor Ballpark. Martinson had a double and scored to
break a 2-2 tie and sparked a three-run sixth as the Bobcats
(28-10) took a 5-2 lead. Aaron Miller had three hits and a run
for the Bears (25-14).
No. 13 Oklahoma 8, Wichita State 1
In Norman, Okla., Casey Johnson had two hits,
including a three-run homer in a four-run second, as OU topped
WSU at L. Dale Mitchell Park. J.T. Wise added two hits and one
RBI for the Sooners (30-11). Will Baez had two hits for the
Shockers (20-20).
No. 14 Virginia 9, Georgetown 3
In Charlottesville, Va., Jarrett Parker had three
hits, including a home run, as Virginia beat Georgetown at
Davenport Field. Corey Hunt also had three hits for the
Cavaliers (32-8-1). After Parker went deep in the third, Sean
Lamont belted a three-run homer in the fourth as the Hoyas
(11-26) took a 3-1 lead. Phil Gosselin had a three-run dinger in
the fifth to put the Cavs ahead to stay. UVa put the game away
with five in the seventh.
No. 15 Miami (Fla.) 13, Florida Gulf Coast 7
In Coral Gables, Fla., Chris Herrmann had an RBI
single to snap a 7-7 tie in the seventh and Dave DiNatale added
a three-run homer as Miami fought past FGCU at Alex Rodriguez
Park at Mark Light Field. Scott Lawson finished with three hits
and three runs for the Hurricanes (27-13). Harold Martinez
homered and drove in four for Miami. Zach Maxfield had three
hits, two runs and two RBI for the Eagles (22-16).
No. 17 Florida State 9, UNC Asheville 2
In Tallahassee, Fla., Mike McGee had a grand slam
in a six-run third as FSU defeated UNCA. Rafael Lopez added a
two-run homer in the fourth for the Seminoles (26-12). Kevin
Weidenbacher and Reed Kreiser both had two hits and one RBI for
the Bulldogs (7-32).
No. 18 Texas A&M 21, Prairie View A&M 4
In College Station, Texas, Texas A&M batted
around in each of the first three innings in pounding Prairie
View A&M in front of 2,897 fans at Olsen Field. After the
Panthers (18-20) scored in the top of the first, the Aggies
(26-14) put up seven in the first, five in the second and nine
in the third to take a 21-4 lead. Kyle Colligan had a three-run
homer in the first and finished with five RBI. Caleb Shofner
went deep and knocked in four. Luke Anders had a dinger and
drove in three for the Aggies. John Villapondo had two hits and
two runs for the Panthers.
No. 19 TCU 10, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7
In Fort Worth, Texas, Chris Ellington had three
hits and three RBI as TCU outscored TAMCC. Bryan Holaday had a
two-run double in the eighth to give the Horned Frogs (25-11) a
10-7 lead. Eric Marshall recorded the final four outs for his
fourth save. Ernie Olivarez had two hits and two RBI for the
Islanders (14-28).
College of Charleston 17, No. 21 Coastal
Carolina 11
In Conway, S.C., Joash Brodin had two hits, three
runs and four RBI as College of Charleston topped Coastal
Carolina at Watson Stadium. Joey Bergman (3 for 4, 1 HR, 4 R, 2
RBI), Cole Rakar (2 for 4, 1 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Matt Mansilla
(4 for 6, 1 R, 2 RBI) each had big games for the Cougars
(24-15). CofC scored in seven of its first eight at-bats. Adam
Rice had four hits, two runs and two RBI for the Chanticleers
(30-11).
No. 22 Clemson 12, South Carolina 2
In Columbia, S.C., Clemson had its 11 hits and 12
runs in the final four innings in its win at South Carolina in
front of 8,212 fans at Carolina Stadium. The Tigers (28-14) had
their first 15 batters retired in order before scoring five in
the sixth, three in the eighth and four in the ninth. John
Nester had three hits and three RBI for Clemson. Ben Paulsen (2
for 4, 3 R) and Kyle Parker (2 for 4, 3 R, 3 RBI) both homered
for the Tigers. Mack DeAngelo had two hits and two RBI for the
Gamecocks (27-15).
No. 23 Florida 5, USF 4 (10)
In Gainesville, Fla., Mike Mooney had a
game-winning RBI single in the 10th to lift Florida past USF at
McKethan Stadium. The Gators (28-14) scored a pair in the ninth
to force extra innings. Mooney finished with two hits and two
runs. Teddy Foster also had two hits for UF. Brandon Smith had
two hits and one RBI for the Bulls (24-15).
Ball State 20, No. 24 Ohio State 8
In Columbus, Ohio, Zach Dygert had two homers and
six RBI as Ball State bashed OSU at Bill Davis Stadium. Dygert
had three hits, as did Kolbrin Vitek (3 for 5, 3 R, 6 RBI), who
also went deep for the Cardinals (17-17). Michael Stephens had
three hits and three RBI for the Buckeyes (29-9).
South Alabama 21, No. 25 Alabama 16
In Mobile, Ala., Jake Overstreet had a three-run
homer and a three-run triple in a 10-run third as USA outscored
Alabama in front of a record-crowd of 4,436 at Stanky Field.
Overstreet finished with four hits and three runs. Clint
Reynolds had three runs and three RBI for the Jaguars (20-20).
Josh Rutledge (4 for 5, 4 R, 5 RBI) and Brandon May (3 for 6, 1
R, 5 RBI) both homered for the Crimson Tide (27-14).
