Stevenson puts UCI
ahead to stay in seventh vs. Oregon
Ross tosses one-hitter for Northeastern;
Stanford handles Santa Clara
In
Irvine, Calif., Casey Stevenson (left) had a two-run double in
the seventh to snap a 5-5 tie and lead No. 3 UC Irvine to a 9-6
win over Oregon Monday at Anteater Ballpark. Stevenson went 3
for 3 with three runs and two RBI. Ronnie Shaeffer went 4 for 4
with one run and one RBI for the Anteaters (27-10). Curtis
Raulinaitis had three hits for the Ducks (13-24). Jeff Hart had
a two-run double in the fourth for Oregon.
Northeastern 12, Rhode Island 1
In Brookline, Mass., JT Ross tossed a one-hitter
as Northeastern routed URI. Ross (3-1) did not walk a batter and
struck out a career-high 12. Jeff Cammans had a double in the
second, stole third and scored on a groundout for the Rams
(24-13-1). Ross retired the final 23 batters. James Donaldson
went deep twice for the Huskies (20-14), a three-run blast in
the third and a two-run shot in the eighth. Ryan Maguire had
four hits and three RBI, including a two-run dinger in the
fifth.
Stanford 11, Santa Clara 1
In Stanford, Calif., Brent Milleville and Joey
August both had four hits as Stanford topped Santa Clara at
Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Mark Marquess recorded win No.
1,342 to move into an eighth-place tie with USC’s Rod Dedeaux.
Milleville had three doubles and three RBI for the Cardinal
(16-16). Milleville had a two-run double in a five-run first.
Stanford added two in the second and three in the third for a
10-0 advantage. Geoff Klein had two hits and a run for the
Broncos (15-21).
Connecticut 14, Quinnipiac 4
In Storrs, Conn., George Springer went 4 for 5
with three runs and six RBI to lead UConn past Quinnipiac at J.O
Christian Field. Springer had a three-run homer in the first for
the Huskies (22-16). Matt Burnett (3 for 4, 4 R, 2 RBI) and Dale
Brannon (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) also had big games for UConn. The
Bobcats (10-24) scored a pair in the top of the first before
Springer’s three-run blast put the Huskies ahead to stay. Joe
Poletsky went deep for Quinnipiac.
Arizona 8, Gonzaga 7
In Spokane, Wash., Arizona scored three in the
top of the seventh to take an 8-5 lead and held on to edge
Gonzaga at Patterson Complex. Shaun Cooper had three hits and
two RBI for the Wildcats (17-19). Hunter Pace and Jett Bandy
both homered for Arizona. Ryan Wiegand had a grand slam in the
fifth for the Bulldogs (25-13).
Southern Utah 12, Utah Valley 11
In Orem, Utah, SUU scored six in the sixth and
five in the seventh on its way to a win at UVU. The Wolverines
(11-28) built an 8-1 lead after five before the Thunderbirds
(20-15) rallied. Dalen Isom had three hits, including a home
run, and four RBI for SUU. Bo Cuthbertson had four hits and
three runs for the Thunderbirds. Jake Rickenbach had five hits,
including a dinger, and three RBI for UVU. Jace Brinkerhoff had
three hits, including a homer, and three RBI for the Wolverines.
North Dakota 12-8, South Dakota State 5-10
In Brookings, S.D., Tony Martin had a three-run
triple in a five-run fourth in the nightcap as SDSU split a
doubleheader with UND at Erv Huether Field. Billy Stitz had
three hits in the second game for the Jackrabbits (8-25). Jake
Magner had four hits and two RBI for the Sioux (8-21). In the
opener, Aaron Cook had two homers and knocked in five as UND
claimed Game 1. Andrew Sadler had four hits, including a homer,
and scored three for the Sioux. Jesse Sawyer and Beau Hanowski
both drove in two for SDSU.
Southern 6, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3
In Pine Bluff, Ark., Frazier Hall homered and
drove in two as Southern salvaged the finale of its three-game
SWAC set at UAPR. Gregory Whitfield had three hits and knocked
in one for the Jaguars (14-4, 21-11). Barry McDonley homered and
drove in three for the Golden Lions (11-10, 18-20).
