13 as San Diego State stops UNLV
UC Irvine outlasts Long Beach State; Oregon
State stops Arizona
In Las Vegas, Stephen Strasburg struck out 13 in
six innings as No. 24 San Diego State defeated UNLV 15-4
Thursday in the opener of their Mountain West series at Earl E.
Wilson Stadium. Strasburg (7-0) allowed seven hits, one walk and
one run. Easton Gust had three hits, including a triple, and
four runs as the Aztecs (7-3, 24-11) claimed sole possession of
first place. Erik Castro had three hits, including a three-run
homer, and five RBI for SDSU. Ryan O’Sullivan had three hits,
including a double, and scored three for the Aztecs. SDSU scored
at least three in four of the first six innings in building a
15-1 lead. The Rebels (4-6, 15-17) scored three in the ninth.
J.J. Sferra had three hits for UNLV. Scott Berke had two hits
and two RBI for the Rebels.
No. 8 UC Irvine 3, Long Beach State 2 (12)
In Irvine, Calif., Dillon Bell drove in the
game-winner with a base hit in the bottom of the 12th as UCI
nipped LBSU in the opener of their Big West series. Steve Tinoco
had a sac fly in the first for the Dirtbags (2-2, 14-15). The
Anteaters (6-1, 20-9) tied it in the third before LBSU took a
2-1 lead on an RBI triple by Devin Lohman in the sixth. UCI
evened it in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring single by
Jordan Leyland. Tommy Reyes had two hits for the Anteaters.
Jonathan Jones had three hits and a run for the Dirtbags.
No. 20 Oregon State 9, Arizona 5
In Tucson, Ariz., Ryan Ortiz went 4 for 5 to lead
OSU past Arizona in the Pac-10 series opener at Sancet Stadium.
Logan Lotti had an RBI double to snap a 5-5 tie in a four-run
eighth for the Beavers (6-1, 19-6). OSU added a run in the ninth
for the final margin. Joey Wong and Stefen Romero both had two
hits for the Beavers. Dillon Baird had three hits and two RBI
for the Wildcats (2-8, 13-15). Bryce Ortega had three hits and
two runs for Arizona.
No. 6 Cal State Fullerton 4, Cal State
Northridge 4 (12)
In Northridge, Calif., the Big West series opener
between Fullerton and Northridge was suspended after 12 innings
due to darkness. The game will be completed Friday at 1:30 prior
to the second game of the series at 3 p.m. The Matadors tied the
game in the bottom of the ninth as Richard Cates drew a two-out
walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Titans had taken
the lead in the top of the ninth as Khris Davis doubled and
scored on a sac fly.
No. 21 Cal Poly 12, Pacific 7
In Stockton, Calif., J.J. Thompson had a
three-run homer in a six-run sixth, one of four dingers for his
team, as Cal Poly topped Pacific in the Big West series opener
at Klein Family Field. Thompson had three hits and knocked in
four for the Mustangs (4-3, 23-7). Ryan Lee extended his hit
streak to 20 for Cal Poly. J.B. Brown (3 for 4, 1 HR, 2 R, 2
RBI) and Nick Longmire (3 for 5, 2 R) led the offense for the
Tigers (4-3, 11-17).
No. 22 TCU 9, Texas-Pan American 1
In Edinburg, Texas, Matt Carpenter homered twice
as TCU topped UTPA. Chris Ellington had an RBI double and scored
in a two-run third for the Horned Frogs (20-10). Carpenter went
deep in the fifth and eighth as TCU built an 8-1 lead. Carpenter
had three walks and scored four. Ellington had three hits and
two runs. Matt Vern added two hits and three RBI. Jordan
Rutenbar had one hit and one RBI for the Broncs (6-28).
Gonzaga 14, No. 23 San Diego 2
In Spokane, Wash., Matt Fields fanned seven in
7.2 innings as Gonzaga stopped USD in the opener of their WCC
series. Fields (5-1) allowed two runs to the league’s leading
offense. Ernesto Ortiz had a two-run double to cap a six-run
third as the Zags (5-2, 22-9) took a 7-2 lead. Drew Heid had
four hits and two RBI for Gonzaga. Ryan Wiegand drove in three
for the Bulldogs. James Meador had two hits and two RBI for the
Toreros (6-1, 22-12).
