Lyons helps Arkansas
get past Arizona State
North Carolina edges East Carolina; Rice
tops SHSU
In Fayetteville, Ark., Scott Lyons had a
pinch-hit two-run single to cap a five-run seventh as No. 9
Arkansas defeated No. 1 Arizona State Tuesday in front of 6,286
fans at Baum Stadium. Andrew Darr’s RBI base hit put the
Razorbacks (23-6) ahead 4-3 before the single by Lyons made it
6-3. Ben Tschepikow and Jacob House both drove in two for
Arkansas. Carlos Ramirez had a home run, two walks and two runs
for the Sun Devils (23-6).
No. 2 North Carolina 3, No. 16 East Carolina 1
In Chapel Hill, N.C., Patrick Johnson had a
no-hitter through six as UNC edged ECU at Boshamer Stadium.
Johnson (2-0) went 6.1 innings with one hit, three walks and a
career-high 11 strikeouts. Logan Munson recorded three outs the
ninth for his first save. Garrett Gore singled and scored in the
third for the Tar Heels (25-7) and Kyle Seager had a RBI single
later in the frame for a 2-0 advantage. Seager added a
run-scoring base hit in the seventh. Dustin Harrington had an
RBI single in the ninth for the Pirates (25-6).
No. 5 Rice 9, Sam Houston State 3
In Houston, Daniel Gonzales-Luna went 4 for 5
with two runs and two RBI as Rice got by SHSU at Reckling Park.
The Owls (22-7) scored seven in the fourth, sparked by a
three-run homer by Steven Sultzbaugh, to take control at 9-3.
Jimmy Comerota had three hits and an RBI for Rice. Mark Wyatt
had two hits, a run and an RBI for the Bearkats (18-11).
No. 7 Miami (Fla.) 8, Florida Atlantic 7
In Coral Gables, Fla., Jason Santana (5-0) fanned
six in six innings as Miami nipped FAU at Alex Rodriguez Park at
Mark Light Field. Harold Martinez had a two-run double in a
four-run fifth as the Hurricanes (24-8) took the lead for good
at 5-2. Jason Hagerty had two hits, one run and one RBI for
Miami. Colby Gratton had two hits, including a homer, and two
RBI for the Owls (17-12). Nick Criaris also went deep for FAU.
UCLA 8, No. 8 UC Irvine 3
In Los Angeles, Cody Decker’s two-run homer in
the third game UCLA the lead for good in its win over UCI at
Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Decker finished with
two hits and three RBI. His third-inning blast gave the Bruins
(12-17) a 3-2 lead. Eddie Murray also had two hits and three RBI
for UCLA. Ben Orloff and Jordan Leyland both had two hits and a
run for the Anteaters (19-9).
