Vern, Carpenter Go Deep as TCU
Forces Game 3
 In
Austin, Texas, Matt Vern belted a two-run homer in the bottom of
the fourth and Matt Carpenter (left) added a solo shot in the
sixth as TCU held on for a 3-2 win at Texas to force a third and
final game Monday at 6 p.m. CT at the Austin Regional.
Taylor Featherston (3 for 4) led off the fourth
with a base hit and Vern went deep one out later to give the
Horned Frogs (40-17) a 2-0 lead. Carpenter belted a dinger with
two outs in the sixth for a 3-0 advantage. The pair had also
homered in Saturday's series opener.
Kevin Keyes had a leadoff double and came home on
a one-out single by Preston Clark in the seventh as the
Longhorns (45-14-1) got on the scoreboard. Brandon Belt had a
run-scoring single with two outs in the eighth to make it a
one-run contest at 3-2. Texas had three groundouts in the ninth
to fall one run short.
Paul Gerrish (7-2) allowed five hits and two runs
in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts to earn the
win for TCU. Eric Marshall surrendered one hit in two scoreless
innings to earn his ninth save.
