Southern Miss Upsets Florida in
Super Regional Opener
In Gainesville, Fla., Kameron Brunty had a
sacrifice fly to put Southern Miss ahead to stay in a four-run
sixth as the Golden Eagles won the opener of the Gainesville
Regional with a 9-7 victory over Florida in front of 3,570 fans
at McKethan Stadium.
Corey Stevens knocked in three for Southern Miss
(39-24). James Ewing went 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI for
the Golden Eagles. Bo Davis and Taylor Walker both had two hits
and two runs for Southern Miss.
The
Golden Eagles led 9-6 after six before the Gators (42-21) plated
one in the ninth and left the tying runs on base. Jonathan
Pigott (right) went 2 for 4 with three runs for Florida.
The Gators scored four in the third to take a 4-2
lead before the Golden Eagles got three in the top of the fifth
for a 5-4 advantage. Florida plated two in the bottom of the
frame for a 6-5 lead before the four-run eruption by Southern
Miss in the sixth gave the visitors a 9-7 edge.
Jonathon Johnston (1-0) pitched 3.2 scoreless
innings with one hit and two strikeouts to notch his first win.
Collin Cargill worked the ninth for his 12th save.
