Notes: Larry Lee has
his Mustangs in the tourney for the first time in their D-I
history. Cal Poly joined D-I in 1995. Among the former standouts
for Cal Poly are Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith and MLB pitcher Mike
Krukow. The Mustangs are one win short of the school record for
wins (2004) and have been close to the tourney field before: in
2005, they had a RPI of 58 and just missed, and they also were
close in 2006 and 2007. Cal Poly has won 13 more games than last
year. Leading hitter Adam Buschini had a monster year after
missing 2008 with Tommy John surgery; his brother Steve played
at San Francisco. Catcher Wes Dorrell likes to catch more than
pitches – he competes on the Bassmasters Classic Tour. Center
fielder Ryan Lee’s father played rugby at Illinois. Closer Eric
Massingham was the Mustangs’ Friday night starter in 2008 and is
a bit of a journeyman having visited 35 states, 10 countries and
the Great Wall of China. Kevin Castner, who has appeared in 15
games, was a 10th round pick of the Rangers out of high school.
Luke Yoder was a gymnast for 13 years.
