Regional, 0-2 College World Series)
Notes: Florida State
makes its 32nd straight appearance in the NCAA Baseball
Tournament, including 30 in a row under head coach Mike Martin.
Heading into the Tallahassee Super Regional, the last time the
Seminoles faced Arkansas was in the Fayetteville Super Regional
in 2004 when the Razorbacks took the series 2-0. FSU is 0-3
all-time against the Hogs. To clinch the Tallahassee Regional
this past weekend, the ‘Noles surpassed or tied 13 statistical
categories in their 37-6 romp of Ohio State, which set an NCAA
Tournament game record for most runs and most hits (38). Four
different players collected 4+ RBI, while three others scored
five times each to set career-highs. Stephen Cardullo tied an
NCAA Tournament record for hits in a game with seven. It was the
27th time in school history that the Seminoles hosted a
regional. Despite these numbers, FSU has yet to win a national
championship. Sophomore Tyler Holt received second team
All-American and freshman Sean Gilmartin earned a spot on the
third team of Louisville Slugger’s NCAA Division I All-America
team. As a program, Florida State eclipsed 40 wins for the 32nd
straight season. Martin has won every award imaginable,
including his second ACC coach of the year in three years this
season, and is approaching 1,600 wins - a feat accomplished by
only two Division I coaches (Augie Garrido, Gene Stephenson).
The offense hasn't missed a beat, despite losing all-everything
Buster Posey. Holt was hitting over .400 for most of the season,
has stolen 33 bases and has an OBA of .514 (53 walks). Cardullo
is a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award. Jason Stidham, who
blasted a three-run homer against Stanford last year in Omaha,
and Stuart Tapley, whose mom is a high school principal, add pop
in the lineup. Senior Ruairi O'Connor has contributed a journal
to CollegeBaseballInsider.com this season. Walks sometimes
plague closer Jimmy Marshall, who saved 10 games and holds
batters to a .228 average. Two-way player Jack Posey is the
brother of Buster Posey.
