Session 3 attendance record of 24,273, passing
mark of 24,067 set on June 15, 2002, when Texas edged Rice 2-1.
Arizona State improved to 2-0 in extra-inning
games, while North Carolina dropped to 2-4.
It was the 80th CWS extra-inning game and the
first since 2007. Three of the past five extra-inning games in
Omaha have involved Arizona State.
Pat Murphy earned his 999th career victory.
The Sun Devils are 28-0 when allowing two runs or
less and lowered their national-best ERA to 2.76.
Drew Maggi broke the freshman record for runs
with 61, passing the mark set in 1983 by Barry Bonds.
ASU struck out a season-high 14 times. The Sun
Devils are 8-1 when their hitters reach double-digit strikeouts.
“How many games can you strike out 14 times, get
picked off twice, make an error and still win?” ASU head coach
Pat Murphy asked. “We were pretty lucky.”
Alex White matched his career high with 12
strikeouts. The first time he fanned a dozen was in his previous
start in the Super Regional against East Carolina. It was also
the third time he went nine innings.
I’m sure the folks at Rosenblatt Stadium
appreciate when the participants are able to partake in many
aspects of the College World Series experience.
“Great crowd, great weather, great pulled pork
sandwich I had in the second inning,” Murphy said. “I was
starving. I realized I hadn’t [eaten], so I ate a pulled pork
sandwich.”
