Last NCAA appearance: 2008 (2-2 in Houston Regional)

Notes: Texas host an NCAA Regional for the 23rd time at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, the first since 2006 – and it likely is the most memorable. The Longhorns were tested to the tune of a 25-inning marathon – the longest game in NCAA history – against Boston College before winning 3-2. The next night, Texas trailed Army 10-6 in the ninth inning before scoring eight times, the last four coming on Preston Clark’s grand slam to win it. The showing by Austin Wood (12.1 no-hit innings of relief, finishing with 13 IP, 2 H, 14 K) against BC was legendary; fellow Austin, Austin Dicharry then came on to toss the last 5.2 innings and earn his eighth win. Opponents hit .179 off Dicharry, a freshman.  The Longhorns and Horned Frogs met once in the regular season, with Texas winning 6-0 on a staff day for both teams (five pitchers threw for UT, six for TCU). Thirty-one of the 34 players on the UT roster hail from the Lone Star State – the other three come from California. Pitcher Chance Ruffin’s father is former major league pitcher Bruce Ruffin. Ruffin has gone 17-4 in his two seasons in Austin. Senior reliever Keith Shinaberry has contributed a journal to CollegeBaseballInsider.com this season. Brandon Belt has been drafted twice in the 11th round – once by the Red Sox out of high school and once by the Braves after a year of junior college (2007). The Longhorns have four players – Taylor Jungmann, Andrew McKirahan, Morgan Mickan and Cameron Rowe – who played at Georgetown HS in Texas. Coach Augie Garrido is the winningest coach in NCAA history. The Longhorns are seeking their sixth trip to Omaha in the past 10 years. Texas became the fourth team in Big 12 history to win the regular-season title and the tournament title in the same year.

Last NCAA appearance: 2008 (1-2 at Stillwater Regional)

Notes: TCU hosted its first Regional and won its first Regional. Freshman outfielder Jason Coats had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth in the championship game against Oregon State. Coats, who had three hits and two RBI in the title tilt, was named the Most Outstanding Player for the Fort Worth Regional. The Horned Frogs are looking for their first College World Series appearance, although Coach Jim Schlossnagle was on the staff at Tulane in 2001 when the Green Wave reached Omaha, and assistant Randy Mazey, a former head coach at East Carolina, also reached the College World Series in 2001 when he was an assistant at Tennessee. Senior Matt Carpenter penned a journal for CollegeBaseballInsider.com in 2008. He missed most of 2007 with an injury and has hit 20 homers the past two years while fielding a slick .960 primarily at third base this season. Leading hitter Matt Vern batted nearly 100 points less last year (.275). Opponents hit .198 off closer Eric Marshall. Freshman Kyle Winkler was drafted by the Brewers in the 37th round and has gone unbeaten for the Frogs. Setup men Taylor Cragin and Trent Appleby have been stellar, combining for a 9-1 record in 109 innings spanning 39 appearances. Tyler Lockwood is 16-5 in his career and also has a twin brother named Drew.  TCU and Texas met once this season, with the Longhorns posting a 6-0 win on April 7 in Austin.
