Redmond Hurls Team USA into Gold Medal Game

 

Todd Redmond tossed 8.1 scoreless innings and three teammates belted solo home runs as Team USA clinched a spot in the 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup championship game by blanking Puerto Rico 3-0 at Stadio Cerreti in Florence, Italy.

 

This will be the 12th appearance in a Baseball World Cup final for the U.S., which is looking for its fourth title (1973, 1974, 2007).

 

Redmond (3-0) allowed four hits and struck out four against Puerto Rico (2-3, 8-4). Jason Childers recorded the final two outs for his first save of the tournament.

 

Ike Davis went deep in the second to start the scoring for Team USA (5-0, 11-1). Buck Coats homered in the fifth and Jon Weber added a dinger in the eighth to cap the scoring.

 

Team USA will meet Cuba on Thursday at Stadio Borghese in Nettuno, Italy. The U.S. will conclude Round Three against the Netherlands on Friday. After an off day on Saturday, Team USA will attempt to defend its 2007 IBAF Baseball World Cup title on Sunday in Nettuno, Italy. The game will be televised live at 10 a.m. EDT on MLB Network.
