Alvarez Homers as Team USA Tops
Venezuela 6-3
Pedro Alvarez hit his fourth home run of the
tournament as Team USA defeated Venezuela 6-3 in the 2009 IBAF
Baseball World Cup at Stadio Cerriti in Florence, Italy.
Team USA (10-1) clinched a spot in the medal
round this weekend in Nettuno, Italy. The bronze medal game will
be on Saturday and the gold medal game will be on Sunday.
Tug Hulett had an RBI double and Terry Tiffee
added a two-run single in a four-run third for the U.S. Alvarez
went deep in the fourth and Trevor Plouffe extended his hit
streak to 10 with an RBI single in the sixth to cap the scoring
for Team USA.
Brad Lincoln (2-0) allowed two runs in 6.2
innings for the U.S. with three strikeouts to earn the victory.
Geno Espineli, the third reliever for Team USA, recorded the
final out for his first save of the tournament.
Hulett finished with two hits and two runs, while
Tiffee and Jon Weber each had two hits for Team USA. Rene Reyes
had two hits and two RBI for Venezuela (5-5).
Team USA will play Puerto Rice on Wednesday at
Stadio Cerriti in Florence, Italy.
