Alvarez Belts Three Homers in
14-3 Team USA Win
Pedro Alvarez hit three of his team’s six home
runs as Team USA moved to 4-0 in Round 2 of the 2009 IBAF
Baseball World Cup with a 14-3 win over Chinese Taipei in front
of 1,524 fans at Stadio Paschetto in Torino, Italy.
Alvarez broke the U.S. Baseball World Cup record
for home runs in a game. His three-run blast highlighted a
seven-run first for Team USA (4-0, 6-1). Alvarez also went deep
in the second and fourth as the U.S. built a 14-0 lead. Jon
Weber, Terry Tiffee and Lucas May also homered for Team USA.
Alvarez went 3 for 4 with six RBI. Weber was 3
for 4 with three runs and three RBI.
Chinese Taipei (3-1, 4-3) scored its three runs
in the bottom of the fourth in a game called after seven due to
the 10-run rule. Hung-Yu Lin drove in two for Chinese Taipei.
Team USA will meet Australia on Friday at Stadio
De Benedetti in Piacenza, Italy. Trevor Reckling (1-0) is the
expected starter for the U.S.
