Ten college players taken in
first 13 picks of MLB Draft
There were 10 college players taken among the
first 13 in the 2008 Major League Draft. Vanderbilt third
baseman Pedro Alvarez was taken with the second pick by
Pittsburgh. Brian Matusz, a left-hander from San Diego, was the
first pitcher taken. He was selected with the four pick by
Baltimore. Miami had two players taken among the first 12. First
baseman Yonder Alonso was taken with the seventh pick by
Cincinnati, while second baseman Jemile Weeks was picked 12th by
Oakland. Arizona State had a pair picked in the first round.
Third baseman Brett Wallace was taken by St. Louis at No. 13 and
first baseman Ike Davis went at No. 18 to the New York Mets.
Georgia also had two taken in the first round. Shortstop Gordon
Beckham went No. 8 to the Chicago White Sox and reliever Joshua
Fields went to Seattle at No. 20.
