Cavaliers defeated NC State and Georgia Tech, 6-1 and 4-1. UVA lost two series
this year, to Wake Forest and NC State. The Cavaliers swept Virginia Tech and
Maryland. Coach Brian O'Connor has averaged nearly 44 wins a season since coming
to C-Ville from an assistant's job at Notre Dame. Sean Doolittle, Brandon Guyer and Jacob Thompson were all selected
All-ACC first team. Doolittle ranks among the best two-way players in the
country. David Adams and Casey Lambert (ACC saves leader) were named to the second team.
Doolittle leads the team with 52 RBI. UVA will try to improve on its1-2
outing in last year's regional. Infielder Jeremy Farrell contributed a journal

Last time in
tournament: 2003 (1-2 in Tallahassee Regional)
Notes: The
Scarlet Knights tied for the regular-season title in the Big East, then went out
and won the tourney. Long-time coach Fred Hill starred in three sports in
college, earning 11 letters as a baseball, football and basketball star. He
began his coaching career at Montclair State, and when he moved on, current
Florida Atlantic coach Kevin Cooney took his spot. "There’s not a
harder-working recruiter in America. When you factor in the lack of facilities
and tradition at Rutgers, it was amazing to see the players he was able to
produce," Cooney wrote about Hill this year in his ongoing journal for
CollegeBaseballInsider.com. His brother, Brian, was the coach of the Orlando
Magic, and son Fred coaches the Scarlet Knights' men's hoops team. Todd Frazier
is one of the best all-around players in the country and surely a first-round
pick in this year's draft. Frazier, the brother of former Rutgers star Jeff
Frazier, slugged .762 this season and has 49 career homers and 65 stolen bases.
Jon McCue turned into a fine mid-week starter and adds depth to a pretty solid
pitching rotation.

ERA, 74.1 IP, 75 H, 19 BB, 47 K), Joe Paterson (4.04 ERA, 98 IP, 107 H, 21 BB,
62 K),
Last NCAA appearance: 2006
(won Corvallis Regional, won Corvallis Super Regional, won College World Series)
Notes: The
Beavers have made two consecutive College World Series appearances, winning the
National Championship in 2006. Much of that team has departed, and the Beavers
may have needed a series win over UCLA just to reach the NCAA tourney this
season.
Darwin
Barney is co-captain this year,
2007 preseason Pacific-10 Player of
the Year, and Pac-10’s No. 4 prospect for 2007 draft, as selected by Baseball
America magazine. Mitch Canham is Pac-10’s No. 2 prospect for 2007
draft. John Wallace’s father, Mike Wallace,
played baseball for Nevada and the San
Francisco Giants; and uncle, Steve Senini, played football for Nevada and the Denver
Broncos and Cleveland Browns. Assistant coach Dan Spencer contributed a
journal to CollegeBaseballInsider.com in 2007. The Beavers' pitching staff
allows under 4 runs a game.
