Turpen time in Omaha

Sophomore leads OSU past Rice

In Omaha, Neb., sophomore Daniel Turpen tossed 6.2 scoreless innings as Oregon State avoided elimination for the third straight day with a 5-0 victory over Rice Wednesday evening in the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Turpen (3-0) made his second start of the season and allowed five hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Joe Paterson pitched 2.1 hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout to preserve the shutout.

The Beavers (47-15) took control with three in the bottom of the third. John Wallace had a leadoff single and moved up one base on Cole Gillespie’s walk. Bill Rowe ripped an RBI single to put OSU on the board. Following a wild pitch and a hit batsman, starter Craig Crow (8-2) departed and Bobby Bramhall entered. He hit Mitch Canham with the bases loaded to force in a second run and Chris Kunda’s RBI fielder’s choice gave OSU a 3-0 lead.

Shea McFeely went deep in the sixth, and Gillespie tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rowe in the seventh to give the Beavers a 5-0 edge.

McFeely finished with three hits for OSU. Tyler Henley and Josh Rodriguez each had two hits for the Owls (57-12).

The teams will meet again on Thursday at 8 p.m. EDT. The winner will advance to the championship series against North Carolina.
