Stutes stops Hurricanes

Oregon State to face Rice on Wednesday

 

In Omaha, Neb., Mike Stutes allowed four hits over 6.1 innings, and Mitch Canham had three hits and two RBI, as Oregon State thumped Miami (Fla.) 8-1 in an elimination game in the College World Series Tuesday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium.

 

The Beavers (46-15) will face Rice on Wednesday at 9 p.m. EDT. OSU must beat the Owls twice to advance to the championship series of the 2006 College World Series.

 

Stutes (8-2) allowed one run with one walk and three strikeouts.

 

OSU scored early to take control. Darwin Barney led off the game with a walk and scored on a Bill Rowe sacrifice fly. The Beavers scored four in the third, capped by an RBI single by Canham, as OSU built a 5-0 lead.

 

Shea McFeely smacked a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth and Canham added an RBI double in fifth to give the Beavers a 7-0 advantage.

 

The Hurricanes (42-24) scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh on a long home run to right center by Dennis Raben. OSU finished the scoring in the top of the ninth on an RBI triple by Tyler Graham.
