Joe Persichina is a junior middle infielder
for Arizona State who will contribute a weekly journal to CollegeBaseballInsider.com in 2006. Persichina, a native of Torrance, Calif.,
started 42 games as a freshman and was an honorable-mention all-Pac-10 selection
after hitting .320 and fielding at a .985 clip. Last year, he started 28 games
on the infield and hit the go-ahead homer - only the third of his career - that
lifted ASU past Cal State Fullerton and into the College World Series.

Finding Our Groove
Last weekend ended up being a good one for us. We won two out of three from
the PAC-10-leading Oregon State Beavers. We almost pulled off the sweep, but
they swiped Game 3 from us late in the third game.
This weekend, we face Arizona. The rivalry is pretty big between our teams.
Not because we are neighbors, but because we have had many long and tough games
against Arizona in the past. This series will be filled with emotion and
hard-nosed baseball.
One of our freshmen, Ike Davis, tied the freshman single-season RBI record
last week, and will most likely break it this week. Records and standings are
not as important to our team as winning, but I think it is pretty special that
Ike will break this record. He is a great player.
School has been out for about two weeks now, and now the day is scheduled
around practice. It is starting to heat up in Arizona, so our practices usually
start in the late afternoon. At night, the weather is real nice, so practice is
not so bad. Our practices are not as long now, because we are deep into our
season, and we are well prepared for this weekend.
Two nights ago, I went to a drive-in movie theater for the first time. It was
weird. Sarah (my girlfriend) and I pulled into the drive-in and had no idea how
the process worked. Some guy in a booth took our money, and gave us a radio
station to listen to. When we pulled into the theater, the radio was fuzzy, so
we had to try to find a spot with a clear signal for about five minutes. I could
tell the people around us were getting irritated; our lights were shining in the
other car windows. We did enjoy the drive-in once we got settled. It was a fun
experience.
Expect a good performance from the Sun Devils this weekend, because we’re
starting to find our groove. This is an exciting time of year, and I’m pumped
up. But before we get ahead of ourselves, we need to focus on the task at hand
and take care of business against the Wildcats. Should be a fun series so be
sure to tune in.
See you next week.
