After nearly 50 years as a head coach, Augie Garrido has been moved to an administrative position at Texas. Garrido spent 20 seasons at the helm of the Longhorns’ program, but will serve as Special Assistant to the Athletics Director.
Garrido owns college baseball’s record for career victories with 1,975 in 48 seasons. He is the first coach to lead two different schools to national championships, both at Cal State Fullerton and Texas. Garrido won national titles in four different decades, earning crowns with the Titans in 1979, 1984 and 1995, as well as 2002 and 2005 with the Longhorns.
During the past 48 seasons, Garrido coached at San Francisco State in 1969, Cal Poly from 1970-72, Cal State Fullerton from 1973-1987, Illinois from 1988-90, Cal State Fullerton from 1991-96 and Texas from 1997-2016.
Garrido is second with 15 appearances in the College World Series, behind 17 by Cliff Gustafson. Garrido has five national championships, second to the 10 by Rod Dedeaux at USC.
Garrido has been enshrined into multiple Halls of Fame. This past Jamuary, he joined the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In July, Garrido will be inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
