2021 College World Series Game 5: No. 9 Stanford 14, No. 5 Arizona (UA eliminated) (box score)
Brock Jones was a triple short of the cycle with five RBI as Stanford sent home UA. Jones had a two-run double to spark a seven-run third and finished the scoring with a three-run homer in the seventh. The Cardinal (39-16) pounded out 20 hits. Kody Huff, Christian Robinson and Drew Bowser each had three hits and two RBI for Stanford. Alex Williams (5-2, 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K) earned the win, while Jacob Palisch (3.2 IP, 3 H, R, K) recorded his second save. Daniel Susac had two doubles and three RBI for the Wildcats (45-18).
Stanford coach David Esquer: “Just a great effort by our team today. A team that didn’t want to end their season, didn’t want to go home and that wants to get some momentum and keep playing in the World Series here.”
Brock Jones: “Happy and unhappy in some aspects. I kind of threw away some at-bats throughout the game, but I’m glad I was able to come back and get that big homer there to end it, kind of put the icing on top. But things started out great for our offense. Hitting is contagious. So we had a lot of momentum rolling early. Then started to shift towards their dugout. Once we were able to get it out we were able to just keep rolling.”
Arizona coach Jay Johnson: “Tough day today obviously. Tip your hat to Stanford. They were ready to play. They hit everything. And you know 24 hours or 36 hours of disappointment here is not going to change the accomplishments of our team. I’m very proud of them. First outright conference championship team at the University of Arizona in 29 years. 45 wins, national seed. Hosted Regional, Super Regional, be champions at both of those.”
