During the fall, Fresno State has been involved in community service. In October, assistant coach Steve Rousey and Jordan Ribera attended a Red Ribbon Week rally at Century Elementary School, telling students to say no to drugs. Also in October, Rousey, Dusty Robinson and Taylor Garrison attended a Red Ribbon Week event at Carver Elementary School. Head coach Mike Batesole and the Bulldogs recently held a free baseball clinic for Susan B. Anthony Elementary School students, joined by current Cleveland Indian shortstop and Fresno native Jason Donald.

 

Former Kentucky left-hander Scott Downs has signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels. Downs, who signed a three-year deal for $15 million, spent the past six seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. He was 5-5 with a 2.64 ERA in 67 appearances in 2010.

 

Utah will host “An Evening with Dave Winfield” on Feb. 15 at the University Park Marriott. The event will include a private reception, dinner and a live auction. A former standout at Minnesota, Winfield played 22 seasons in Major League baseball. He is currently an analyst with ESPN.

 

UCF now has season ticket on sale for its 32-game home schedule. Mini-season packs and family packs are also available.

 

Louisville has named senior OF Drew Haynes, junior 2B Ryan Wright and sophomore RHP Matt Koch as team captains for 2011 in voting by players and coaches. Haynes started all 64 games a season ago and hit .291 with 15 steals. Wright was an All-American in 2010, batting .366 with 16 homers and 80 RBI. Koch was 3-0 with a 3.27 ERA this past season.

 

Members of the Houston baseball team recently visited patients at Texas Children’s Hospital. The Cougars became involved with Texas Children’s Hospital in 2007 when sophomore David Murphy was diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia. With his leukemia currently in remission, Murphy is scheduled for his final treatment in January.

 

The Alabama baseball team will visit Sprayberry Education Center on Thursday for its Christmas Ball. They will join the students in singing Christmas carols, arts and crafts, and decorating the school’s Christmas tree.

 

Elon has season tickets now on sale. Newly-renovated Latham Park will host 26 home games, including NC State, East Carolina, West Virginia and UNC Wilmington. Individual game tickets will go on sale in mid-January.

 

UMBC announced that seniors Rick Phillips and Rich Conlon will be co-captains for the 2011 campaign. Phillips, a catcher who was a captain in 2010, batted .228 with three homers, 16 RBI and a fielding percentage of .985 a season ago. Conlon, a shortstop, hit .250 this past season with nine doubles, two homers, 19 runs and 19 RBI.
