Long-time Stanford head coach Mark Marquess passed away on Jan. 30.

Coach Marquess led the Cardinal for 41 seasons from 1977 to 2017, posting a record of 1,627-878-7 (.649). Stanford won consecutive national titles in 1987 and 1988. Coach Marquess led the Cardinal to 30 NCAA Tournament appearances, 18 Regional crowns, six Super Regional titles and 11 conference regular-season championships.

Coach Marquess was National Coach of the Year three times and Pac-10 Coach of the Year nine times. He was also a Team USA Olympic gold medal-winning coach. Coach Marquess was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021. He earned spots in the American Baseball Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame in 1997 and the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.

A three-year starter at first base for Stanford (1967-69), Coach Marquess was All-America First Team in 1967 and All-America Second Team in 1968. Following graduation, he signed with the Chicago White Sox organization and spent four seasons as a pro baseball player before serving as a player-coach with Des Moines’ Triple-A team in 1973.
