In Charlotte, N.C., Will Mercer and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as top-seeded ND blanked #12 VT. The Irish (30-10) will face eighth-seeded Virginia on Friday with a spot in the semifinals on the line. Mercer (3-2) gave up three hits in 5.0 innings with three strikeouts. Alex Rao tossed three hitless frames with two walks and three punchouts before Liam Simon gave up one hit in the ninth with two strikeouts. Jared Miller went 2 for 4 with a triple, a homer, three runs and two RBI for ND. Tanner Thomas went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk for the Hokies (27-25).
