Conan's homer helps Santa Clara
upset No. 11 Stanford
BYU's Shutt shuts down Northern Colorado
In Santa Clara, Calif., Ryan Conan homered in the
eighth to lift Santa Clara past No. 11 Stanford 10-9 Monday
evening. Sean Ratliff’s sacrifice fly in the sixth for the
Cardinal (25-14-2) had tied the game at 9-9. Conan’s solo shot,
his second of the season, gave the lead to the Broncos (26-16).
Mark Willinsky fanned three in the ninth to secure the victory.
Jon Karcich went 3 for 5 for Santa Clara with a homer, two runs
and four RBI. Gabe Alcantar also went deep for the Broncos.
Jason Castro homered for Stanford, and Cord Phelps added a
three-run double for the Cardinal.
BYU 10, Northern Colorado 5
In Greeley, Colo., Justin Shutt tossed six
scoreless innings in relief as BYU doubled up Northern Colorado.
Shutt (1-0) entered in the fourth with the Cougars (17-26)
trailing 5-1 and allowed four hits with no walks. Sean
McNaughton’s two-run homer highlighted a five-run fifth for BYU.
Kent Walton also went deep in the seventh for the Cougars. Kevin
Sandberg had two doubles and three RBI for the Bears (15-29).
