Alvarez to miss four to six weeks
Vanderbilt All-American third baseman Pedro
Alvarez will miss four to six
weeks with a broken hamate bone in his right hand, Commodores
coach Tim
Corbin confirmed late Tuesday night.
Alvarez, who hit .368 with 18 homers and 68 RBI a year ago,
injured his hand
in Vandy's Opening Day win over Oregon State at the DeMarini
Invitational in
Tempe, Ariz. Alvarez sat out the final two games of the weekend
against
Arizona State and Miami (Ohio), with Andrew Giobbi starting in
his place.
After the 4-3 win over the RedHawks, Corbin said in a postgame
interview
posted on the Commodores' Web site: "We'd rather take it slow
now than screw
him up for a month or so. I don't think there's any ligament
damage, but he
doesn't have any grip-strength, and he can't throw the ball.
That makes it
tough to play baseball."
