Kessel's knock caps four-run rally for Hawaii-Hilo

Shane Kessel’s two-run single capped a four-run fourth as Hawaii-Hilo avoided a season-opening sweep at Hawaii 4-3 Sunday afternoon in front of 3,229 fans at Les Murakami Stadium. The victory for the Vulcans (1-2) snapped a 15-game losing streak against the Rainbows (2-1). UH started the scoring in the third as Shane Hoey’s base hit brought home Kevin Fujii. In the top of the fourth for UHH, Thomas Brown scored on a wild pitch to tie the score and Dayne Ogawa’s ground-rule double put the Vulcans on top by one before Kessel’s hit gave the visitors a 4-1 advantage. Fujii drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth and Brandon Haislet’s sacrifice fly in the seventh made it a one-run contest. Dustin Gilmore held Hawaii scoreless over the final two innings to save the victory for Kekoa Lee.
